This post talks about an actual occurrence that happened unexpectedly to the web traffic coming into one of my very small niche sites. As a result of this experience, I became very interested in exploring the potential of using Twitter to generate traffic to sites in general.
But first, let me tell my story of exactly what happened.
My Twitter Story
I had decided to do a series of interviews with experts in the field of this particular niche.
So I followed the usual protocol of sending out invitations by email. As soon as I had a keen participant, I sent her the questions and encouraged her to add her bio so that readers could access her site and/or services if desired. I received her answers, sent back the finalized draft for approval and then published the interview. I tweeted my small number of followers; remember this was a relatively new site for which I was still looking to get more traffic (a never-ending quest for all web owners I know). Finding diversified ways to get traffic to your site has to be a top priority, regardless of whether you are just starting out or if you are a seasoned web developer. But I digress, back to the story.
Traffic from Twitter
I notified the expert that her interview had been published and sent her the link so she could easily click on it from her email. About 20 minutes later, I happened to check my Google Analytics and was stoked to see that the daily traffic had more than doubled, in the space of less than an hour.
The expert had tweeted her Twitter followers, letting them know that she had been interviewed and where they could find the interview. Whilst her list of followers was modest, it was much bigger than my following at the time. Her tribe of followers, keen to see the interview she had tweeted about, had clicked on the provided link through to my site. What a perfect example of a free traffic generator and certainly illustrates how instant traffic can be accomplished via the right medium. Free website traffic is hard to beat, especially if it is targeted traffic, because these are people who are coming to your site voluntarily because they want to see some content that you have published.
So if you are constantly searching for leads on “how to get traffic to my website”, start to think outside of the square. Contact and interact with other people in your niche. If they find your content really useful there is a good chance that they can help increase website traffic by sending their own interested readers your way.
A surge of interested people like this should provide a good chance to increase followers on Twitter. There’s a high chance that some of them would see something they liked on your site and return, hopefully over and over again and hopefully to sign up for your newsletter at the same time.
How to increase followers on Twitter will be the subject of a future post but suffice it to say today, any exposure you have to followers of other website owners, provides an opportunity to not only increase traffic to your site but to also gain more followers on Twitter yourself.
But always remember this: it can take a while to build traffic to your site that could be considered significant. Internet traffic is precious so avoid the leaky vessel type website where visitors come once and then slip away again never to be seen. Instead, have your newsletter subscription form up and running so that it is an invitation for people to stay connected to your website.

The book provides great tips on how to add Twitter followers, how to make online money using Twitter and which web tools to use to automate the process. It’s a great read.

Twitter as a Source of Free Web Traffic
Any source of free web traffic is invaluable and Twitter is one example so if you can get free followers on Twitter you can start to build up your legion of loyal readers and hopefully customers . I love Twitter from the point of view that you don’t have to compose a lengthy essay or enter into an exhausting dialog. You just get right to the point (of course you have to do just that given that there is a limit of 140 characters for your message). It is snappy and in an instant, readers can tell if it’s worth their while clicking through to the post on your site. And of course retweets are like an endorsement. Someone else thought your post was so good that they want to let their own crowd (followers) know about it.
